  • Extent:
    [130] leaves, fol. Leaf height: 317 mm, width: 195 mm.
    Binding:

    Early 19th century red goatskin over boards with gilt tooling; doublures. Bound by Charles Lewis - see Dibdin, Bib. Spenc., v.7, p.85. Spencer arms on upper board (Stamp 2 - garter).


    Decoration:

    A few coloured initials at the beginning, otherwise most spaces for initials have just an empty black border. Sections in the middle (gatherings g-l) seem to have solid black stamps where the initials should be (eg. fol. [g1r]). Most of these have been smudged by the washing/bleaching process.


    Acquisition:

    Part of the Spencer library acquired by Enriqueta Rylands in 1892 from John Poyntz Spencer (1835-1910), 5th Earl Spencer for The John Rylands Library

    Condition:

    Leaves [kv] and [kvi] misbound.


    Additions:

    Extensive marginal annotations throughout which have been washed and most no longer legible.
