All-over gilt tooling. Italian (Bologna), late 15th century. The
dense, uniform pattern echoes Islamic bindings from Egypt and Syria
of a century or so earlier. The design is completed by a narrow
edge of blind tooling. The binding has been rebacked. On a
Renaissance manuscript containing works by Plutarch and Censorinus,
in Latin.
