Manuscript of orders and letters written to Admiral Herbert
Description
The Queen's Binder. English, c. 1683. Black goatskin with a central
diaper pattern, elaborately gilttooled with floral tools and rolls.
This manuscript was bound by a craftsman who worked extensively for
Samuel Pepys (who, like Admiral Herbert, worked for the Admiralty),
and who is known only as Queen's Binder B, because Catherine of
Braganza and Mary of Modena owned examples of his work. On orders
and letters written to Admiral Arthur Herbert, 1672–83.
