Description
  • Summary:
Manuscript 128 is a collection of six texts attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1153): (ff. 1r-37r) De duodecim gradibus humilitatis et superbiae; (ff. 37r-44v) Sententiae Bernardi; (ff. 44v-49v) Expositio orationis dominica; (ff. 50r-67v) Soliloquia sive De amore dei sive De contemplando deo; (ff. 67v-103v) Tractatus de natura et dignitate amoris; (ff. 103v-140v) Brevis commentatio in Cantici canticorum. Only the first two texts are currently believed to have been written by Bernard, the fourth and fifth text were actually authored by William of Saint-Thierry (d. 1148), a contemporary and close friend of Bernard's. The manuscript dates from the third quarter of the twelfth century and is probably copied at Ten Duinen abbey. The texts are copied in a single column per page. Initials are in red ink without decoration, just as the rubrics and the incipits and explicits. The final verso leaf contains an index. The fly leaf at the back contains an ownership inscription of Ten Duinen, together with the date 1491 (it is unknown whether this is the date of acquisition). The manuscript is bound in a seventeenth-century binding of the 'Campmans' type. [Summary by Dr. Mark Vermeer]
